Amateur (Ham) Radio is an FCC-licensed radio service, which has applications for disaster communications when all other means fail. Many county EOC's throughout the country are equipped for licensed Ham operators to operate their radios, and relay shelter manning, survivor, first responder, need for supplies and water, and other vital information, as needed.

It's is a great hobby, enjoyed by all ages and varieties of people. In its most simple form, the hobby allows a citizen to talk to other hams using his own personal radio. The range can be short or long, depending on the frequency employed, considering the season, time of day and other exotics such as the 11-year SUNSPOT CYCLE. You can use voice, International Morse code, slow or fast (like a common TV) television, as well as other modes to communicate with other hobbyists. Many even use their home computers as accessories.

If you're interested in hobby radio at all, ham radio is the ultimate experience! It's like operating your own radio station. Want to communicate around the world on shortwave? Want to use VHF and UHF frequencies like you can hear on a scanner? Want to operate your own television station?

Want to experiment with packet radio----an on-the-air version of the Internet---or "go retro" with Morse code? Wouldn't it be great to be able to communicate directly with a ham aboard the Space Shuttle using your own radio station? You can do all of that, and a lot more, with ham radio.

If you want to learn how, Nittany Amateur Radio Club ham classes are for individuals or families, ages ten through one-hundred, who are interested in radio communications both around town and around the world. Amateur ("ham") radio is an exciting hobby that involves voice, video, and data communications. If you are interested in making new friends, learning radio technology, and enjoying great camaraderie, Amateur Radio is the perfect hobby.
