"Kitty" was actually once a very handsome faux feline, complete with a beanbag for warm-up in the microwave.

Now, woefully, he is a one-eyed, rumpled eyesore. I can't get him away from Nolan long enough to wash him, so currently his mottled fur is covered in spaghetti sauce and banana-strawberry vegetable juice. He smells like death but Nolan loves him.

Kitty gets thrown over the edge of the crib every morning, to signal Nolan's daily arrival into the land of the awake. Kitty must accompany Nolan in his high chair, in the car, at storytime, for walks in the park. My kid seems to be increasingly attached to kitty, and now insists that kitty come with him into the bathtub every night, with disastrous results for the cat.

The other morning I left for daycare without kitty in the car, and we weren't more than 5 minutes away from the house, when a pathetic little voice in the backseat started reminding me,"Keee.Keeee." Of course. Kitty. And we had to go back and get him.

Does your child have a favourite stuffed animal? I am hoping the Internet will tell me that Nolan will cease to carry this thing around by the time he is 16.
Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Parents outraged by explicit sex education lesson

Filed under: Middle school, Public school, 8-9 years
Some students in a Chicago school recently got more sex education than their parents would have liked. Standard sex ed classes usually include information on dating, peer pressure, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. But at Wolcott School in Thornton, Illinois, 8th grade students were asked to read aloud from a list of "frequently asked questions" which included explicit information on specific sex acts. Parents and students say this went beyond the mechanics of 'how to do it' and veered into 'how to make it good' territory.

After some of the children complained to their parents, the principal ordered the health teacher to apologize. This isn't good enough for some, who feel the teacher's lesson was voyeuristic and want him suspended or fired.

Even organizations who are pushing to get more comprehensive sex-ed programs into Illinois schools feel the lesson was too much. Jonathan Stacks, from the Illinois Campaign for Responsible Sex Education, feels the material was not age-appropriate and "way over the top." "This is really getting into the aspect of pleasure . . . and the mechanics of how to have good sex," Stacks said. "It goes way beyond what the national medical associations recommend for a comprehensive program."

The teacher claims it was all a big mistake. The handout the children were given was taken from a British web site that promotes education about AIDS and HIV prevention. Instead of choosing the material designated as "mainly for young people", he took the information from a link titled "general questions about sex."

If you give the teacher the benefit of the doubt and allow that maybe selecting that material was a mistake, you still have to contend with the fact that he did not stop the lesson when it became clear that the subject matter was inappropriate for 14 year old children. I think he should be fired. I make it for myself pretty often for lunch, or supper if I don't feel like cooking anything much, and one day they wanted a bite. I think I probably even said, "Uh, okay. I don't think you'll like it, though." Shows you what I know.

If you are looking for a healthy small meal or snack for your little one, try this out. And, if you have any other scrambled eggs with healthy stuff added variations that your kids like, lay 'em on me in the comments.

Heat a small skillet over medium high heat with a touch of butter or olive oil

Crack two or three eggs leaves, as much as you like (remember, it'll cook down), and salt, if you like

Keep stirring and scraping the cooked egg off the bottom until the eggs are all cooked and the spinach is dark green and cooked (it'll seem like it's taking too long and isn't going to work, then all of a sudden you'll be finished)

Next I'm going to see if they'll eat it with tomatoes.<h6 style="clear: both; But somehow, when you are a working parent, the day off is a more marked thing. Marked specifically by the fact that your child is in your care -- ALL DAY.

I must admit, I'm out of practice. Much like sick days, I find myself scrambling for things to do. The realities of a day off BC (Before Child) involved laundry, grocery shopping, a healthy dose of socializing with friends and family, and a potentially unhealthy dose of French martinis. I still have many of those elements to pack into a weekend, except now I have a preschooler in tow. (Meaning the martinis are out, because parenting hungover really sucks.)

The errands and events must be scheduled around mealtimes, naptimes, the need for military strategy and surgical precision to go anywhere. And somewhere in there, you need to do something stimulating, and hopefully educational, for your child too. Some days, my day off seems like more work than going to work.

We try our best to plan something worthwhile, but often, there's hitch that throws off the whole day. And sometimes, you need to get something done around the house and rest at the same time. It's never too soon to teach multitasking, is it?

How do you structure your days off?
Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Catholic teenager, Protestant foster parents

Filed under: Lifestyle, Teenager, 15-19 years
For nine years, a teenager, identified only as AR in court documents, lived with foster parents in Scotland. Now she is suing Highland Council for it. It seems that she was placed with Protestant families, despite being Catholic. According to papers filed by her lawyers, "The council failed to facilitate her continuing to follow her religious persuasion throughout the period she was looked after and accommodated."

Now, I understand that Protestants and Catholics don't get along over in that part of the world as well as they do here, but still, this seems a might petty. Would a "thank you for taking me in and feeding and clothing me" be too far out of line? On the other hand, if the foster parents tried to force her to convert or somehow treated her poorly for being Catholic, then perhaps she has a complaint.

I'd like to think that in such a situation, I'd nod politely at the whole religion thing and be damn thankful for their assistance. Heck, I'd even have no problem with going to services with them -- I grew up going to mass every Sunday and now I'm a champion thumb twiddler. Sometimes, that's just what you do. The study included 16,475 college students nationwide who completed an evaluation called the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. The NPI presented students with statements like "If I ruled the world, it would be a better place," "I think I am a special person" and "I can live my life any way I want to."

Data for the study stretched back to 1982, when the NPI was first introduced. Since then the number of students with above average scores has risen 30%, to two-thirds of participating students.

While a certain level of narcissism can be a good thing, it "can also have very negative consequences for society, including the breakdown of close relationships with others," according to study co-author W. Keith Campbell of the University of Georgia. For example, according to the study, narcissists "are more likely to have romantic relationships that are short-lived, at risk for infidelity, lack emotional warmth, and to exhibit game-playing, dishonesty, and over-controlling and violent behaviors."

The study's authors blame the increase in narcissistic attitudes to the desire to build self-esteem in young children. Instead of acquiring a sense of interdependence and community, kids are taught that they are special and therefore better than others; in their adult life, this often plays out in an inability to accept criticism or a preference for self-promotion over helping others.
Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bobby Brown in jail over child support

It seems Bobby Brown is having trouble getting money together. The former R&B singer has repeatedly failed to fork over the $19,000 he was ordered to pay in child support, and is now in jail.

This shouldn't be a big surprise. The arrest warrant was issued in October of last year, after Brown didn't show up for a court hearing to discuss the outstanding support owed to Kim Ward -- the mother of two of his children. The 38-year-old was finally apprehended while attending his daughter's cheerleading competition.

Brown is also in the midst of divorcing Whitney Houston, with whom he has an additional child, but no word yet as to whether or not there's child support issues in that case.

According to his lawyers, the guy's broke: "Although this agreement was put in place when he was Bobby Brown the star, this agreement is being enforced when he is not always able to find work."

But keep in mind, that's what Brown said the last time he was arrested for failing to pay child support, back in 2004. He told the judge he had no source of income, and wouldn't be able to cover any of the debt he'd amassed in 10 years of neglecting to make payments. After one night in jail, he was able to come up with $63,500.

Somehow, I don't think he'll be behind bars for very long.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

How do you toddler proof?

Filed under: Moms, Sleep, Toddler, Adventures in Parenting, Childproofing, Exploring
I wasn't very good at babyproofing the house. I tentatively moved some cords around, and inserted some plastic doohickies in the light sockets, but in general I didn't think about the stuff that mattered: my pen tray on the desk, leaving my juice on the coffee table. I learned as I went.

I am dreading Nolan's transition into a toddler bed. There will be no crib bars to contain him in a toddler bed, and he knows how to open doors. I envision him stealthily sneaking out of his room while I sleep: meandering in the kitchen to eat some dog food, perhaps swirling his hand in the toilet at a leisurely pace, relieved for the lack of indignant Mommy telling him "no, no, no!"

Also, I am finally getting 7 hours of sleep a night and I am so unwilling to part ways with them. I envision Nolan creeping into my room at night, pulling my hair, inserting his finger into my eye socket at 3:22 AM.

Any suggestions, dear readers? How did you toddler proof your kid's room? I am worried it cannot be done.
Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Naomi Watts to be a Mom!

Filed under: Pregnant celebrities, Celebrity babies, Celebrity parents
Did you hear the buzz on Oscar night about Naomi Watts' "bump"? I peered at pictures of her teeny lithe figure in her cute yellow dress and I thought, no. That is probably some gas, perhaps a raisin in there. But I remember clearly sitting in his quiet, sun-filled nursery, feeding him and watching his hands make small circles on my skin. I remember thinking "Please stay like this. Couldn't you just be my tiny, O-mouthed baby forever?"

I have thought that a lot along the way: at 5 months, 8, 11, 14: This. This is it. My favourite stage.

But now that I have the wisdom of hindsight, I can honestly say that this is the best time now. Sure, there are toddler tantrums and sporadic strange behavior, but Nolan is such a little personality now. Almost everything he does borders on hilarious, and he has quirks (the shoes must be put away, sippy must be discarded in the sink, blankie must cover toes while reading The Foot Book) that make entire days entertaining. So, officially: 18 months is my favourite stage.

I'm curious whether it's different for everyone. Veteran parents, what was your favourite stage?
Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Schools consider increasing hours

Filed under: Media, Teachers, Elementary school, Middle school, High school, Public school
Schools in the United States are pondering the merits of a longer school day.

When I first saw the headline, I was filled with the same sense of dread I had when I heard several years ago that local schools here were pondering a year-round school system. Don't kids work hard enough already? Must everything be so educational? What about fun?

But according to advocates, the slightly longer school day makes the pace "less frenzied" and allows for more down time and "fun" classes, as well as the traditional reading and math.

Massachusetts is leading the charge on the initiative, but lawmakers in 4 others states are also considering the extended hours.

The longer school day would cost taxpayers about $ 1300.00, with most of that money going toward paying teachers for the extended hours. Optional "fun" classes have included courses such as forensics and drama. Teachers say that once kids are engaged in the "fun" classes, they are more open to other learning. That makes sense to me.

What do you think? Would you be OK with a longer school day for your child?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Baby Names - Help! My daughter Cassidy is nearly ten years-old, but I often wonder if she is actually going on 16 or 17. Lately I find myself sending her back to her room to change into a shirt that doesn't reveal her bellybutton when she raises her hands in the air. I know part of this is due to the fact that she is growing at an alarming rate and many of her shirts no longer fit correctly, but I know that the other part of it is due to the societal marketing of sexiness to young girls.

Everywhere my daughter looks there seems to be a message that sex sells, and she wants to eat it up with the biggest spoon possible. The Disney Channel features young girls wearing way too much make-up as they flounce about in form fitting, body revealing outfits while they flirt with boys. The magazines in the grocery stores show those same girls on their covers. The cosmetics aisles at Target have a special section with bright, fun flavored make-up marketed just for this age group. And that is precisely part of the problem of marketing to the 'tween population, it all looks like so much darn fun to this age group. My daughter seems to believe that if she globs on some bright, watermelon lip gloss, slithers into a tight shirt and sparkly pants that all will be good and fun in her life. What isn't good and fun is her mother who repeatedly says, "No way. That shirt is too small. Those pants need to be higher on your hips. Honestly, you just can't make this stuff up. The latest controversy to be revealed is her will, which was prepared in 2001. It seems that Howard K. Stern was named as executor, however her entire estate was left to her son Daniel, who predeceased Anna last September. The document was never updated to include her new baby Dannielynn, and in fact carries a clause that states, "I have intentionally omitted to provide for my spouse, including any future spouses or children."

The will doesn't specify where Anna wanted to be buried, so now Stern and Anna's mother, Vergie Arthur, are arguing about burial plots. Arthur insists that her daughter's final resting place should be in her home state of Texas, while Stern maintains that Anna wanted to be buried beside her son in the Bahamas.

The poor child wrapped up in the middle of all this controversy, Dannielynn, is currently in Howard K. Stern's custody.
Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Judge forces 13-year-old to have abortion

Italian law dictates that a minor cannot decide whether or not to abort her child, and thus, the decision is left entirely in the hands of the girl's parents. As result, the judge in a recent case ordered an unwilling 13-year-old to have an abortion.

The girl became pregnant by her 15-year-old boyfriend, and her parents, incensed, demanded that she have an abortion.

After the procedure, the 13-year-old reportedly went "into a frenzy," and threatened to commit suicide. She is now undergoing treatment.

I can't help but find this appalling. I can't imagine how the country came to have such a law in the first place, and then for it to be enacted like this seems incredibly unjust. I'm pro-choice, but to deny a person -- whatever age -- the right to have their baby is unfathomable.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Teens engage in "sport killings"

Filed under: Teenager, DVDs and Videos, Discipline
This has got to be one of the most frightening trends I've read about in ages. It seems that more and more teenagers are participating in what criminologists are calling "sport killing." The victims of these random attacks are homeless people, having done nothing other than be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The majority of attackers are middle-class teens without criminal records, kids that have not previously displayed behavior that would lead anyone to believe they could be capable of committing crimes this horrible.

A number of experts believe that the idea for this began with the 2002 release of "Bumfights" - a direct-to-video series where homeless people fought each other and were paid a small amount of money. The video was available to order on the internet, and hundreds of thousands of copies were sold. In what they believe to be direct imitation, some of the teenagers have videotaped themselves committing these crimes.
Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Baby Names - infant boy clothing, layette, toddler boy outfits : Bella Baby Store

infant boy clothing, layette, toddler boy outfits : Bella Baby Store
Adorable Brand name and designer outfits for boys and girls.

AspDotNetStorefront Forums - View Profile: Baby Boy
User Name: Remember Me?
