EA's NCAA March Madness 07 gets new DLC
Electronic Arts announced today that they've just released new in-game downloadable content for their recently released sports title, NCAA March Madness 07.

The collegiate ball-playing game hit shelves around two months ago and to continually spruce up your hoop-shooting gameplay experience, EA released a Selection Sunday Bracket Pack which features the following:

id Software looking to Enemy Territory as potential franchise
According to CVG, in an interview with PC Zone Magazine, id Software seems interested in turning Enemy Territory into a franchise. Unless it's going to be titled Enemy Territory: Quake Wars 2, we're presuming it's not the Quake part in the title that's gonna be franchised, is it? Said id's Kevin Cloud:

When you work on a game you get a ton of ideas, and sometimes you have gameplay mechanics that won't fit into the structure - you can't just plug them in. They're just sitting on the table - ideas that myself and Paul [Wedgewood, head of Splash Damage] have talked about.

Ideas they would love to implement in a future Enemy Territory. Hmm... Enemy Territory: Doom perhaps? Hey, all we can be sure is, if Quake Wars turns out well (on PC and PS3/Xbox 360 consoles), id may just want to extend (Well, at least we're sure it's not going to have "Episode (x)" in the title now, is it?).

GDC 07: Video Games Live concert images
Game Informer Magazine has three images of the Video Games Live (VGL) concert that closed the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007 at San Fransisco. VGL is a concert tour that features music from video games, and each concert is a treat: the music is combined with video presentations, light and laser effects, and other special effects.

Having a VGL concert at the GDC made perfect sense, and the GDC concert was a star-studded one (we earlier published a list of all the composers and artists at the GDC VGL).

VGL: a multimedia concert. Like any Video Games Live concert, the music was amazing. There was an orchestra and a 16-member choir conducted by game composer Jack Wall (Myst, Splinter Cell, Jade Empire). There was a screen that showed synchronized video footage. Audience members were brought up to play Space Invaders and Frogger on the big screen - the orchestra provided live music (complete with tempo changes!).

As usual, during the Metal Gear Solid portion of the program, an actor dressed as a guard walked onto the stage - and the infamous alert exclamation mark (!) appeared over his head - much to the amusement of the audience (the poor guard didn't notice a large box sneaking past him). (An earlier QJ.NET article on VGL concert dates has a video of a similar scene from another concert.)

Other musical highlights included "Baba Yetu" from Civilization IV, the explosive "Liberi Fatali" from Final Fantasy VIII, and the World of Warcraft suite - all three masterpieces got huge reactions from the audience.

A night of video game music artists. As reported earlier, there were also performances by LucasArts composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian. "VertexGuy" powered the stirring electric guitar anthems of Contra and the Halo 3 grand finale. The "Video Game Pianist" was also there to play Dig Dug and Pac-Man music on the piano.

Super Mario and Zelda composer Koji Kondo (who received a lifetime achievement award at the GDC earlier in the week) played a piano solo of music from Super Mario Bros. (the audience went wild, taking out their Nintendo DS units and mobile phones to wave them in the air as lights).

Let the world know: video games are a legitimate art form. Having the VGL grace the GDC with its presence is a statement to the industry and to industry-watchers and critics. "I think what tonight helps prove is how legitimate video games have become as an art form," said Tommy Tallarico, a game composer and the co-creator of VGL.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars undergoes censorship in Germany
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for the Xbox 360 and PC by Electronic Arts has had a few cosmetic changes for its German release. In keeping with the country's stricter gaming laws, certain changes had to be implemented. This censoring would not affect inter-version balancing though, the developers of the game assured.

So what's the big problem? Apparently, the NOD suicide bombers will no longer be giving up their lives for NOD in the German version of the game. They will simply drop their bombs at the appropriate spot and move out of the map. This minor change is small compared to some of the retooling or outright cancellation of other games that were to be released in Germany.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for the 360 and PC is set to be released on March 28 in the US, December 31 in Europe, and December 31 (Xbox 360 version only) in Australia.

Video games: Library of Congress cultural artifacts
Henry Lowood, curator of the History of Science and Technology Collections at Stanford University, has a proposal that has been submitted for the consideration of the US Library of Congress, the research arm of the United States Congress and what is practically the national library of the United States of America.

The proposal, to use the words of Heather Chaplin from the New York Times, is video games have "a history worth preserving and a culture worth studying." The proposal was drafted by a consortium: Stanford University, the University of Maryland, and the University of Illinois.

Video games have a cultural and historical significance. On March 8 at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007, Henry Lowood announced a game canon, a list of important video games worth preserving. "Creating this list is an assertion," Lowood said, "that digital games have a cultural significance and a historical significance."

The video game canon: "the stuff we have to protect first." Below is a list of the members of a five-person committee that presented a canon of games worth preserving at the GDC.

The National Film Preservation Board compiles an annual list of films that are added to the National Film Registry managed by the Library of Congress. If the US Congress believes that films aren't necessarily tools of the devil, then maybe the world is ready to agree that video games such as these are worth preserving for the rest of human history:

Emulators and preservation. Lowood explained a particular challenge. Hardware has changed so much that thousands of games can only be played using emulators - which technically violate copyright laws. It's something to think about - isn't it - that emulators and piracy are serving, in their own way, to keep the memory of old games alive. Now let me see if I can bring up Shadow President (DC True, 1994) on DOSBox.

Tiberium Wars "Live Action" video
As the release of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (PC and Xbox 360) nears this coming March, the race to find out as much information about the latest addition to the C&C series continues. Well, if you're a die-hard C&C fan, this video is QJ's blowout for today. In full HD glory, you can view a teaser to the story of Tiberium Wars and get a sneak peek at their new actors, including bug crushing Rasczak of "Starship Troopers" and Models 6 and 7 of the Cylons from "Battlestar: Galactica".

If you can point them out (6 is kind of hard to see, she is shrouded in the dark), then you must be more than just a fan of C&C! The return of Kane, the arrival of the Scrinn, the endless war for control of Tiberium...it's the C&C story in a whole new cinematic light. While we're all waiting for the demo of C&C3 to come out, we guess we'd all have to settle for this for the time being.

Vivendi announces aqcuisition of Wanako Games
Vivendi SA (formerly known as Vivendi Universal), the media conglomerate behind major developers like Blizzard and Sierra Entertainment, is announcing the addition of a new studio to their growing family. Wanako Games - one of the larger studios in Latin America - has just been acquired, and will now be working under Sierra Entertainment to help further develop their growing crop of online games.

"The combination of Wanako's development experience, creativity and technical capabilities will contribute greatly to our presence as a leading publisher of console download online games," said Sierra Online president Ed Zobrist. Wanako and Sierra will be best remembered for their team-up in the highly successful Assault Heroes title for the Xbox Live Arcade, with Wanako expected to release 3D Ultra Mini-golf Adventures soon.

In line with the acquisition, Wanako president/founder Esteban Sosnik will head the newly formed Sierra Online branch in Latin America. "We are very excited to join a visionary group like Sierra Online who is focused on bringing truly entertaining and innovative online games to a mass market," said Esteban regarding the deal.

Crackdown street date broken...again
When it comes to Crackdown, it seems that updates come in bunches. During the time when the game was generally unknown yet, all news were about Halo 3 beta keys that come with the game. Then the demo came and people tried it.

Now, there's a lot of hoopla about retailers breaking the street date just to sell the game early. Here comes another one: UK catalogue retailer Argos made RealTime Worlds' Crackdown available in its check and reserve system one week before the official release date.

Rival retailers noticed this and reported Argos to gaming news site MCV. A spokesperson from Argos explained that the incident wasn't intentional:

On investigation, we have been made aware that there have been a small number of cases where Crackdown has already been sold. This is down to a genuine error and we are currently ensuring that there are no further sales of this product until Friday 23rd February.

The spokesperson further added that Argos doesn't endorse breaking street dates and that their company will take appropriate action actions to ensure that this doesn't happen again in the future.

SBK 07 developer Black Bean Games, together with former developer Milestone, just released a handful of details about the up and coming racing game. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of things, the two would like to inform fans that they are already on the game's finishing touches.

Black Bean proudly announced that all elements of the SBK universe have been faithfully recreated for this release: riders, tracks, atmosphere, TV style replays, and even the Superbike Umbrella Girls. All five official teams (Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha) will also be present.

Speaking of which, there will be a total of 22 bikes and 22 riders, with the riders having unique and individual characteristics. The game will have four modes: Race, Race Weekend, Championship, and Challenges.

Superbike World Championship 07 (PSP, 360, PC) Should be expected sometime this coming April.

CVG has compiled a list of what they feel are the best guns in gaming... "ev4r." The list covers our favourite boom sticks from the Cerebral Bore of Turok 2 all the way to Unreal Tournament's portable nuke - the Redeemer.

As happy as we are that their list has old and genre-defining favourites like Quake's BFG 10000 and innovative and quickly outlawed "traps" like Perfect Dark's Laptop Gun, we're a bit disappointed that they failed to include a gun that we feel caused a certain game to garner 35 Game of the Year awards. We're wondering why Valve Corporation's Gravity-Gun from Half-Life 2 isn't there.

Yeah, the little devil doesn't really make things go boom, or make things 'asplodey in multiplayer, but you have to admit: As fun as a redeemer m-m-m-mega-kill is, it doesn't compare to a kill via a thrown cabinet.

The moment Alyx Vance gives you that "catch" tutorial with her lovable robot, Dog, and then you get thrown into Ravenholm, you know that you're in for gameplay that you've never experienced before. Army of headcrab-controlled zombies? Block their advance with storage boxes, and then chuck propane tanks and random steel objects at them.

Alicia alert: Bullet Witch for Xbox360 goes gold

If you're one of the people who have been smitten with the charms of Bullet Witch's heroine, Alicia, take heart as she's set to grace your Xbox 360 soon. Fans won't be disappointed as Atari has just announced that the title has gone gold, and it's bound to be released on February 27. And everything is going as scheduled.

Developed by Cavia Inc., this action game is set in the year 2013 when the world has just suffered major natural disasters, and to top it all off is an invading force of demons. In comes Alicia, gun-ablazing (yes, "gun", as in singular) and her quest to rid the world of the forces of evil.

Though some may complain that the game is old (it HAS been out in Japan since July 2006), you gotta admit that it's hard to resist a pretty girl with a weapon that transforms into various types of firearms.

Ben Brinkman:Details for MLB 2K7 on Wii, 360
First for the bad news, or good news, depending on how you look at it. 2K Sport's Ben Brinkman is letting the Wii hopefuls know that they will not be getting Major League Baseball 2K7 for this year - look out for a 2008 release.

Ben explained that 2K had decided to hold back on the Wii release because of the Wiimote - they needed more time to make the most out of its innovative controls system (uh-oh, get those helmets ready, boys).

Moving on, Ben did provide some more interesting tidbits of info for their upcoming title, such as player characteristics. As Brinkman explained, while the devs worked overtime to ensure that the characters were spot-on with the real-life counterparts, gamers were still allowed to alter them as they wish, be it the accessories they wore, or the way they carried their mitts.

Brinkman then followed up with some extra tidbits for two other features: franchise and game achievements. For Franchise mode, Ben said the game can carry up to four players.

As for the Xbox 360 version of this title, Ben was unable to spill anything in terms of the game's Achievements list, although he hints that there are 33 of them just waiting to be found. Still feeling anxious? Wait it out just a bit longer, as the game demo makes ready for its release...

GoW gets a quiet update

Only a few weeks after the last Gears of War patch, another patch was released yesterday and a mysterious one at that. There was no info regarding what the patch does exactly. Epic hasn't made any announcements and we wonder, what does the patch fix? The multiplayer glitches? Mark Rein said that the new patch is "a minor compatibility update. No gameplay or functionality changes at this time."

At least we know that the Epic guys are doing something about the problems. We just don't know which, but at the rate they're going, they'll probably get to fixing our Gears of War woes soon enough.

Halo 3 Dev update: In-game rendering
Details, details, details. Thus is the credo that Bungie's showing for Halo 3, which Frankie over at Bungie's main site reiterates with this week's development update.

This segment deals with Frankie's musings over in-game rendering, as he narrated his recent in-game experience. According to Frankie, his last play-through was beginning to show just how far detailing for even the most minor bits of environment were going. From the way rust lingered on the chain link fences to the random garbage strewn on the streets, Frankie was happy to report that the in-game "grime" was becoming more and more noticeable in their level of detailing.

Now, solid objects are one thing, but rendering convincing water textures are an even bigger challenge for a lot of developers. So how goes Halo 3's water effects? As Frankie further explained:

Hao and co. are still messing with water, and it s getting better every day. They re going to be dropping it into the areas where our (perfectly attractive) placeholder water is right now. You ve actually seen one of those areas in the pre-alpha shots of Valhalla. I can t wait, because I am Earth s most famous video game water geek. On the day it s dropped in, I am locking myself in the playtest lab with a pair of Wellington boots and an umbrella.

From every nook, cranny, and rust covered pipework, it seems the dev team is making sure to add in the layers of detailing to give this game that "right" feel that's a must-have for FPS titles (Like say, Resistance?). Yeah, we know - somebody out there is probably demanding to know how the actual gameplay (and hardware) is turning out - if you haven't signed up for Beta tests yet. Given that it's a Halo title, we're sure it's going to rock either way. With segments like this, the developer's telling us "A good game sweats the details!" Didn't Spielberg say something like that?

Mass Effect boxart and gender issues
Joining the ranks of Master Chief and Marcus Fenix, hero icon Commander Shepard is the main character of Mass Effect. Supposedly, that's him/her on the box art to your right. Although some of you might argue that he/she doesn't have the balls to take on the Halo and GoW icons, what he/she does have under his/her belt is a whole alien race to wipe out.

Ok. Hold up. Him-slash-her? No, we're not talking about transvestites here. It's been known for quite a while now, but for those who still aren't clear about the playable character options, we might as well spill the proverbial beans (again).

You'll be playing as Commander Shepard, true. But you'll be able to customize his/her person entirely. From facial features to job class, from gender to skill sets. It is an RPG after all. Well, FPS-RPG, to be exact, but RPG nonetheless.

Now, we're not sure if Commander Shepard is the guy/chick in the left, right, or center of the box, but regardless, that's one trio with a lot of balls.

Online GTA
If your'e looking for an online GTA and you have the computer games, Multi Theft Auto will suit your needs. It's online GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.

Gears of War sells out at some Japanese retailers

Late last week, the globally popular Gears of War went on sale in Japan. If early early indications are to be trusted, then Gears, the very "American" game could, impressively turn out to be a surprise hit in Japan. The Senkablog reports that the title sold out at retailer Sofmap, and that the Gears demo at retailer a-Too drew a crowd.

Some of us here at QJ think that we have to credit those Japanese otakus that dig western stuff (Japanese folks who enjoy western styled games, as opposed to American japanophiles who squirm in glee at the sight of a white-haired, androgynous, svelte, anime male) for the support that Gears has been getting in Japan.

Some folks have noted that it would be amusing if it turns out to be a bigger hit than Blue Dragon. Other folks note that it would be even more amusing if Microsoft starts to think that due to the welcome that Gear's got, the way for them to get to the hearts of Japanese gamers is to make even more shooters!

Some of us here at QJ think that they (those Japanese gamers) don't really care if its a shooter or not. What matters is that the game should deliver a good story (hence the Japanese's love for RPGs), or have gameplay is that is innovative.
